TIHE Baltimore, a collaborative effort co-produced with city residents and supported by various organizations across Baltimore's districts, aims to foster community healing. Spearheaded by Each Teach Inc. and Each Teach Community Ventures, LLC. TIHE Baltimore offers culturally relevant behavioral health resources grounded in science to aid residents on their wellness journey.
Residents benefit from a range of resources, including the Healing Us Together (HUT) train-the-trainer program, MIN-T trauma-informed interventions, nationally recognized Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certification, QPR suicide awareness training, BCRI's emotional CPR course, and NARCAN training with harm reduction toolkits. These initiatives are designed to enhance restorative wellness knowledge and skills among facilitators and participants alike.
In TIHE, Maryland residents and community leaders undergo Healing Us Together (HUT), a 5-session train-the-trainer series. HUT equips them to facilitate healing-centered community conversations using the SELF Group Community Conversations Curriculum. This model empowers participants, particularly those exposed to overwhelming adversities and violence, to reframe their experiences and tackle life challenges.
Trusted members of their communities, including interfaith and other community leaders, who are regarded as non-conventional first responders completing HUT coaching become certified facilitators and receive $250 in compensation. This funding comes from seed funders: Johns Hopkins University (JHU), Behavioral Health System Baltimore (BHSB), and the Krieger Foundation. Facilitators are tasked with guiding structured community conversations using the SELF Group Community Conversations Curriculum.
Participants in these conversations receive $150 as equitable compensation for investing in their self-care and community healing. Since its inception in 2020, over 300 city leaders and residents have completed HUT, addressing mental health concerns amid the COVID-19 and racial trauma pandemics.
Upon completing Healing Us Together (HUT), certified facilitators in TIHE Baltimore can join Ministerial Trauma-Informed Care Intervention (MIN-T). This program offers training for trauma-informed community intervention and continuing education, aimed at enhancing the restorative wellness expertise of HUT facilitators in TIHE Baltimore.
MIN-T is rooted in trauma-informed NEAR science, aligning SAMHSA's 8 dimensions of wellness with trauma-specific psychoeducational intervention. NEAR science encompasses Neuroscience, Epigenetics, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and Resilience, offering insights to fortify individuals, families, and communities. SAMHSA's 8 dimensions of wellness advocate for an integrated approach to wellbeing, fostering improved quality of life outcomes.
Participants in TIHE Baltimore are given opportunity to complete youth and/or adult Mental Health Association of Maryland nationally recognized mental health training course. Participants who complete the course earn a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certification to become practitioners of mental health first aid. The full training cost per participant is covered through funding from TIHE Baltimore and coordination with Behavioral Health System Baltimore (BHSB).
Participants in TIHE Baltimore are provided access to customized 90-minutes training on emotional CPR, in partnership with Baltimore Crisis Response, Inc. (BCRI). Participants learn how to identify and navigate systemic resources to mitigate mental health and emotional crisis happening in community.
Participants in TIHE Baltimore receive education of harm reduction best practices. Participants are also trained to use Naloxone/Narcan and receive harm reduction kits that include Naloxone/Narcan, fentanyl test strips, clean syringes, alcohol swabs, clean/cut disposable straws, sharps container, and tourniquets.
Participants in TIHE Baltimore are given opportunity to complete QPR certification training course through partnership with Alternative Approaches to Mental Health Crisis Center, Inc. (AAMHCC). Participants who complete the QPR course are educated in suicide awareness to reduce suicidal behaviors and save lives by providing innovative, practical, and evidence-based suicide prevention training.
